About Energy PsychologySome of my clients want to know what exactly is Energy Psychology (EP)?EP is a collection of differing approaches for helping people heal their
psychology difficulties, aka "suffering." Energy Psychology includes techniques that help you find and strengthen your inner and outer resources. Energy psychology focuses on the relationship between thoughts, emotions, sensations, and behaviors, and known bioenergy systems (such as meridians and the biofield). Although it may sound "woo-woo," we know that invisible energies are very much a part of human beings. For example, we can measure the electrical impulses of the heart beating, or the frequency of brain waves. Energy psychology is no longer on the fringe of therapies that can be shown to help those in emotional distress. It has scientific research to demonstrate its success. According to the website GoodTherapy.org, "Energy psychology is based on the broad theory that mental health and physical health conditions are related to altered flow and function in the body’s electrical energies and energy fields. The idea that the body’s electricity and energy can be manipulated to produce healing and spiritual development is a root of many ancient, holistic approaches to medicine. Energy psychologists believe physical interventions to regulate electrical signals or energy fields can be combined with evidence-based exposure therapy to retrain the brain and help individuals overcome any physical and emotional reactions affecting health and well-being." I use a number of EP techniques in my work with clients, including tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Psychotherapeutic Reiki. |
Psychotherapeutic ReikiPsychotherapeutic Reiki is an approach to therapy that adds in-session work with the human energy field (HEF). It is based in traditional Reiki energy healing combined with psychotherapy, as taught by Richard R. Curtin, Jr., Psy.D., RMT.
In traditional "talk therapy," the therapist and the client work to reduce symptoms on the mental, emotional and behavioral levels of the HEF. In therapeutic Reiki, the scope of work is extended to the subtle energy level as well. Some believe that it is on this subtle energy level that most psychological symptoms take hold or are maintained, and consequently this is a necessary and effective level to work on. Psychotherapeutic Reiki draws upon teachings from Eastern energy concepts, mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, Reiki and Western psychological perspectives and is being used around the world in hospitals, clinics and offices to treat psychological, emotional and behavioral problems, unresolved trauma reactions, stress and chronic pain. Emotional Freedom Technique, "Tapping"Sometimes I will incorporate a somatic (body-based) approach into psychotherapy. My favorite technique is using acupressure points to quiet and release emotions. This can be done by simply holding the points briefly, or I may teach a client Tapping, which decreases stressors and increases resilience and positive thoughts.
Research has shown that tapping can result in:
